Merci Beaucoup

A huge thanks to everyone who came by for the Bernhardt Show!

Lincoln Kayiwa

Interview
Tell me a little about yourself.
I was born in Kampala, Uganda in 1979 and now I am currently based in Helsinki - Finland. I just graduated as a Master of Arts from the University of Art and Design Helsinki UIAH in December 2007. Upon which, I started my own limited brand product design company KAYIWA - an epitome for novelty, aesthetics, functionality and environmental friendly design.

How do you promote your work?
Since I just started the company, I am really greatful for the Internet for enabling my work to be accessible to many.

Where is the most interesting/exciting place you've been?
Hmmm...there are many contexts to consider. However, I know where I want to visit next – Tokyo...

Met Museum of Art

Went to the Met over the weekend-there are several special exhibits, including Jeff Koons' huge, whimsical outdoor sculptures on the rooftop, Fashion and Superheroes showcasing the actual Spiderman and Catwoman suits as well as Ironman, Batman, and variations of superhero inspired fashion by superfamous designers.

And of course, the vast permanent collection including paintings by Van Gogh, Klee, and many others are exhibited as well.

Jeannette Ramos

Interview

Tell me a little about yourself.
I live in Anchorage, Alaska where I've spent most of my life. I love it here not only for the tremendous beauty but the easy going people. Traveling has allowed me to cultivate my photo skills and learn about other cultures. One of the biggest benefits of living in Alaska is being able to go hiking and running through some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

How long have you been a photographer?
I've been a photographer for about 3 years. However, taking pictures has been a passion of mine from an early age.

What inspires you?
Ansel Adams & Annie Leibovitz ... & travel. My sister, who's the designer and owner of Madebygirl, has been a mentor and a huge inspiration for me.

Favorite music, books, etc.?
Robi Draco Rosa: I love his music. And I love books about acting (method acting) reading about how to teach the craft itself is fascinating to me.

How do you promote your photographs?
At this moment I sell all my photos as note cards through my website http://www.jeashoots.com/ transforming my photos into cards gives me a chance to put my work out in a unique and personal way, where people can send one of my cards to their loved ones. I also network with other photographers.

If you could be in any moment (past, present, or future), where and w/whom would you be?
I'd be myself, and in the present because I love who I am now, comfortable in my own skin. Being close to my family is very important to me as well.

Fair Fair Day!

Thanks to everyone who stopped by at the Street Fair yesterday! The weather was sunny and gorgeous. It was a pleasure to meet everyone, vendors and browsers alike! It's always fun to meet fly customers and hear their feedback. If you'd like to be in the loop for the next Shirtisfly event, sign up on our mailing list here.

Speaking of shows, I went to the National Stationery Show at the Javits Center in NYC held May 18-21. With over 1000+ nationwide vendors, representing all types of stationery items and designs, I spent a whole afternoon savoring the eyecandy.

Some favorites from the show: Gilah, Madebygirl, Tiselle, Shesocreative, Old Tom Foolery, and Jilly Jack Designs (I love their eco-friendly & creative packaging).

Jennifer Ramos, founder/designer of Madebygirl seemed strangely familiar, though we've never met. Then I realized we were both featured on Fly: Fabulously Creative as Fly Girl of the Week!
It was a pleasure to meet her and her equally fabulous sister and photographer, Jeannette Ramos, who took our picture:

Cover to Cover

Some direct mail I toss, some I browse then toss, but Anthropologie catalogues I keep. I love the creative photos and unique copy describing each item. I look forward to getting the catalogues, almost as much as a subscribed magazine.

Painting with Envelopes

Shona Macdonald's envelope art pieces are amazingly intricate: slender strips of envelope pieces cut and glued to "paint" the canvas with waves, lines, and compact forms.

Seen closely, the words on the collaged strips seem to follow a theme: financial terms, etc.

I'm wondering how she collected such variety of colors and words on envelopes. And how long it takes her to glue them all!
